My friends and I here at college all have at least one springer hand gun. I have a revolver, a S&W replica...and they both have Beretta replicas. They're fun to play around with, but I haven't done much more than that.

I have a crappy battery operated one that's not even modeled off a real gun. I'm thinking about buying a gas blowback MP40, but I'm not sure exactly how they're powered. I've read things that make it sound like you can recharge the gas in some and in others you need to buy new gas or something.

Most gas guns have a gas chamber in the magazine. And you sort of "plug it in" to a bigger bottle of green gas that lasts quite a while. Then you also load the pellets in the magazine and you're good to go.
Personally, I think the echelon of airsoft (from low to high power) goes:
Electric -> Spring -> Green Gas Blowback -> CO2 Blowback -> Green Gas Non-Blowback -> CO2 Non-Blowback
But I agree, if I were to get a CO2 or Green Gas, I'd get a blowback because they look so fucking cool.

Wait what's a non-blowback... The wiki article was kind of hard to follow.

Well you know how on real semi-automatic pistols the slide is "blown back" by the gas exchange from the gunpowder firing, and this action ejects the old cartridge and a new one is loaded from the magazine, right? A blowback airsoft gun mimics this, but in the process you lose efficiency, since some of the green gas is being used for that. It looks cool, but it doesn't do anything. A non-blowback doesn't cycle the slide like this, and so you have more power going into the shots, and supposedly the charges aren't as frequent.

Of screw that then, I wouldn't care about it being less efficient. The more realistic the better. The MilSim stuff seemed like a lot of fun, limiting the magazines to the correct number of shots and everything. I would assume the blowback would give some recoil, too?

There seems to be a little recoil, but nothing on the order of even like..a .22, even. But it fucks with your aim, so it makes it a bit more realistic there.
